Tuesday Tunes { Link-Up #4}

Hello lovelies and happy day! The end of January already?! This month I've been running Tuesday Tunes and opening it up to you with a link-up. Thanks to wonderful participants thus far for joining! If you'd still like to join, it's open through next Tuesday.

Essentially, I created this to share new artists I discover and spread musical inspiration through this blog. You can post a little bit about the song/artist you chose or anything you'd like to share. Choose to follow the fun prompts above or do otherwise, as you're inspired. The idea is to share some musical inspiration and create a positive vibe in the community. Here's mine and the link-up is below. Feel free to grab the button I made :) 


My Pick of the Week:
You know when you hear a song and love it but don't know who it's by? I'd heard this song a few times and had that experience. It came up on my Pandora station (yay - it doesn't work in Peru), so I checked out the group and really like all of their stuff. Especially the singer's voice. 

The feeling it gives me is kind of nostalgic and sweet. It takes about giving time and space, even when it's really hard. It's kind of what Rafa and I are going through now, to a small extent. While it's a challenge to be away, I really am glad for the opportunity to be apart to miss each other. It's a good practice in growing appreciation....oh, and PATIENCE!

I've been doing my weekly Tuesday Tunes for awhile now, since last August actually...It began because I love the feelings that can be evoked from music and I wanted to document and share new artists I find. January 7: new discovery

Gaby Moreno! This lovely woman totally had me from the first song I heard. I browse through NPR Tiny Desk concerts and KEXP sessions often and that's how I found her. She's a spunky lady with bluesy, soulful voice and she creates some really passionate tunes. Another reason I love her is that she's strong in her Guatemalan roots and has an album in Spanish. I'm posting two songs to give more of a flavor of her and to hear both in English and Spanish. Isn't she a gem?!?

Gratitude + Funky Tunes for New Years! {Tuesday Tunes #20}

Greetings beings! 

Sending lots of gratitude to 2013 and everyone who came across my path. I'm really jazzed about this blog and the awesome ladies I've met so far.  It's been hard at times and I've struggled with laziness, but I enjoy having something constant to call back on, a type of visual journal open to the world. This year a goal is to be braver in my blog. I want to be more personal and share more of the 'ups', but especially push myself to sharing some 'downs'. After all, that's real life. 

So thank you for stopping by, saying hi and sharing with me too. Becoming part of this international-awesome-lady-blogging community has been an incredible gift this year.You all are so special and I'd hug every one of you if I could. Tuesday Tunes #18: Trombone Shorty

Welcome to Tuesday Tunes, where I share a musical inspiration or discovery for the week. Please feel free to do the same. Shortly I will be adding a link-up form so it will actually be a 'thing'. Woo get excited!!

Today's feature is a big band New Orleans favorite, and amazing musician - Trombone Shorty (and Orleans Avenue). When I hear this kind of big band, horns and all music it just makes me want to get down and dance it out. It's so contagious! I'm just organizing and packing things and playing this short playlist is perfect. Hope you like (it may be impossible to not)!

Tuesday Tunes #17: Local Natives

Oh happy day! I suppose it's actually night now, but I'll go with the rhythm (also because we saw a lovely choir show last night and this motivating song stayed in my head)...Busy and long days before the holidays have commenced! Like I mentioned, we're on the prowl for a little department in Lima, which is quite a feat because of our specifications (in part due to proximity to work). We've been stalking internet websites with offers, calling people, and I've been squeezing in some visits during the day. Something's on its way we hope...Send some good thoughts our way that we find something before I go to visit the states so Rafa doesn't have to do everything by himself!

So it's still Tuesday and I want to share this band that I'd just heard of last week. Truly, I've have them on play pretty much non-stop since then. Their style is upbeat, harmonious, and heart-felt. It makes me feel like driving to the beach and blasting this. I find it pretty nice and relaxing, with a fun edge - and at least half the band have some impressive mustaches. Now, have a little listen!

Hey there! I'm back from my little trip. And thanks to some awesome ladies and our cooking skills, it was really wonderful. I'm so lucky to have these good people in my life :)

This morning I luckily stumbled upon this amazing song-writer and performer, Lucy Spraggan. She has such a way of story-telling. I found myself listening, as if she were reading a book to me. Her music is full of emotions from joyous to reminiscent. It seems most fitting to start out the day by sharing this upbeat song, Lighthouse.

Weekly Wishes + Tuesday Tunes #14

Good day all! It's been way too long since I've participated in Melyssa's Weekly Wishes, so today I'm excited to connect with these lovely women again. I really love this link-up because it's a nice little push to inspire me with accomplishing some things that have been on my to-do list. So first Weekly Wishes and below is my music pick of the day for Tuesday Tunes.

Since I haven't participated much lately, I'll just share that I accomplish something from my Lima bucket list! We went to Pachacamac ruins, about an hour from the city (another post coming soon). 

Now here are my aspirations for this week.
1) Start going through things. In December I'm going back to California for awhile and my hubby is moving to another place in Lima (somewhat stressful, but poco a poco). So I'd like to start going through things this week, purging, and organizing a bit to prepare for the move/trip. 
2) Be thankful. I'd like to use this as my mantra and thread it through everyday. And I'll participate in one of these thankfulness projects I'm seeing around blogland and admiring so much.
3) Catch up on my online class. This week, I'm getting back on track to finish out my class! It's really enjoyable and opening my perspective on education. I can't wait to do this one!

And here's the musical portion of the post! I started Tuesday Tunes (14 weeks ago) because I love finding and sharing new artists and music. Here is where I share a song and a little bit about the artist or how I found them. 

This week, my props go out to the T Sisters. These girls have some of the most beautiful harmonies, with a classic, folksy twang. I kind of fell in love with them and their music when I went to a variety show in Oakland, in which they were all dressed up with fun costumes (who wouldn't love that?)! This song is their version of Paul Simon's American Tune and it just really hits a deep spot in me. Go T Sisters!

Hey lovelies - it's Tuesday and time to share a new tune I'm loving. If you feel like linking up, you're welcome to! Last week I was busy and unable to post a tune, sorry about that. So here's my pick for the week...

Joyce Jonathan! I actually found this artist from Anna's blog at East See Do, when she shared some really lovely French music. This beat is called "ça Ira" and is a guaranteed toe-tapper. I really like the whimsical sound, maybe French music in general does that.

Tuesday Tunes #12

Hey there! It's Tuesday Tunes, where I share a new musical discovery with you and invite you to join in too. In last week's post my husband shared his musical pick {see it here}. And this week's pick is a a guaranteed booty shaker...

I don't remember exactly how I found Miriam Makeba, but it was part of my on-going artists to check out. After hearing her music and learning more about her, I saw huge role  she played in history. Actually, I felt a bit ashamed I hadn't known of her before. 

Makeba was a South African activist and singer, who shared about her country and the difficulties during the Apartheid. She was the first African voice to spread this message and music worldwide. Makeba became known as "Mama Africa" and is most famous for this song below.

Cheers to strong women, like Makeba. May the legend live on in us today.

Tuesday Tunes #11 + yoga

Hey there, Lisa here to bring a new Tuesday Tune (a little early)! This is where I share a new or rediscovered song/artist. I'd love to have you join along if you feel inspired :)

But first - a little check-in:
I started up yoga again last week and am just so so excited about it. For the first time I tried Bikram (35*C temp while working out). Dang, that was some sweat (in case you wanted to know)! It was also kind of a challenge to keep up since I've been in low exercise status these days. BUT this will be motivation for me to get back into a healthy flow. I felt so good afterwards, with more energy and creativity. Yesterday my hubby even came with me to buy a mat - it's purple and I can't wait to use it tomorrow! (It's the little things, isn't it?) 

So, back to the muzak! 

This feature is kind of special because my husband has chosen the song! The group is The Brunettes playing the song If You Were An Alien. I'd describe it as fun and quirky. And a fun fact is that they're from New Zealand (is anyone else dying to visit there??). The part I like about this best is when I asked him why he chose the song. He said "it was in my head all day and it reminds me of you" (in Spanish though). Sweetie!

Tuesday Tunes #10 {dubstep-classical fusion}

Hey there! After a week away on vacation, I'm glad to be back. More on my trip to come, but first ~ Tuesday Tunes. Here is where I share a new (or re-discovered) song or group that intrigues me. I'd love to hear some of your current favorites too, if you'd like to link up!

Today's feature is a really intense and beautiful dubstep-classical fusion by Lindsey Stirling. I stumbled upon her music awhile ago but I continue to admire the unique mix of sounds used and feelings that it brings out in me. Plus, this video "Crystallize" is shot in gorgeous ice-castles in Colorado and I love to imagine traveling there one day.

Im taking a little travel break and vacation from Lima this week. Currently in my previous home of 1.5 years in Cusco, Im writing with lots of concentration on a AZERTY keyboard. I didnt know what this meant before, but basically the keys are all different...

Anyway, onto the tune for today! Ive chosen a bay area group from my homestate, California. I first saw this group live and immediately was intrigued by their classic Americana folk style. Theyre called American Nomad and this song they perform below is called Roam and Travel.

Happy October everyone! Wow, I feel like when October hits there's so much to do...think about all the holidays coming up and finishing the last quarter of the year! I love the craftiness of this time of year - all the Halloween treats and decorations. And I am determined to find a pumpkin...so let the pumpkin mission commence!

So today I´m featuring someone who´s music and spirit has personally touched my life. He goes by Mestizo Magic. He´s the reason I actually met Leia, because we met and lived with each other in Spain. Currently he´s working his way into the country scene in Tennessee, but has accumulated skills in all genres of music. It´s always fun to see the new tunes he´s working on. I´m such a fan and love this guy!

Tuesday Tunes #7: We Were Evergreens

Hey there. It's that time of the week to share musical discoveries and inspirations - wohoo! Leia is also linking up, so go over and check out the funky fun artist she's sharing this week :)

So in my YouTube and musical searches I stumbled across a new-to-me band. They're called We Were Evergreens. I immediately fell in love with them. They have a very happy and whimsical sound and their songs are like poetry with a sweet xylophone (which makes me wish I learned more than 'happy birthday' on my xylophone when I was 8). Plus, they're French:) You definitely should check them out if you're intrigued. Maybe you'll be as smitten as me!? :)

A Cultural Bit: Movie Theaters {+Tuesday Tunes #7}

Hello lovely ladies, and gents too! Can I share something I was SOOOO excited about from this weekend? I went to the movies!!! This was something pretty special because until recently I was living in Cusco, where there are currently no movie theaters. So this Sunday Rafa and I were exploring downtown Lima and when we stumbled upon a little local theater at 7pm with no other plans, it was just the right thing to do. Despite the run-down appearance of the place (we go for authentic and cost-effective), we had a really fun time. We saw Aviones (Disney´s new movie Planes) and it was really cute. Aside from one other movie I saw in Spain, this was my first Spanish movie in a theater. Kids movies are perfect because it kept my attention and I wasn´t lost in very fast phrases. It was definitely a success!

 

 

 

And since today is Tuesday, I have a really fun fusion of Tuesday Tunes for you! The artist is called Miki Gonzalez and is apparently pretty well known (at least in Latin America). His music is an interesting mix of techno-trance, jazz, and traditional Andean music. I heard of this guy awhile back from a traveler I stayed with but didn´t listen much until lately. I love it because of the stories of the Andean people that are incorporated into this new style of music.

Tuesday Tunes #6 Childhood Flashback

Hello and welcome my lovelies!
Today's Tuesday Tunes we're mixing it up a bit! I was telling my husband about the children's music I would listen to and sing along with as a kid. I loved singing and still have some of those songs are still ingrained in my mind (Bananaphone or Baby Beluga anyone??). Naturally in this conversation Raffi came up as the children's entertainer of the 80s and (I think) 90s. Do you guys remember him?! Man, this guy has a talent for story-telling and entertaining kids! Look at the kids' faces in this video - it makes me so happy!!

I was interested in seeing what Raffi is up to these days. This guy's even cooler than I thought - he has a campaign about honoring children and creating a commercial free childhood. And the part that I really respect is that he actually follows through with his philosophy - he's never advertised or promoted his music to children.

A Cultural Bit + Tuesday Tunes #5

Well hello there! I hope everyone had a beautiful Labor Day weekend! Although yesterday wasn't a holiday in Peru, Friday was the celebration of Santa Rosa. While the majority of people here are Catholic, this day was a holiday when many people rest at home. I learned that it's also common to go to a convent with their hopes and wishes written and toss them into a well. While I didn't check out this little tradition and am not religious in the common sense of the words, I would love to see this wishing well action! (Not to mention, it would be an epic photo for Weekly Wishes)!

Now onto the music which I've been all about these past few weeks! This heart-felt and soul-expressing artist is Nahko Bear (member of Medicine for the People). This music doesn't just sound good, but it's music you can really feel: natural, ancient, and pure. It's a struggle to give justice to this music in words, so I'll let you feel for yourself. 
The song below is called "Black as Night" and I chose it because I love the playfulness and sense of humor with a humble message. Some other favorites are "Aloha Ke Akua" and "Wash It Away". If you like his sound, be sure to find more and spread the word!

Tuesday Tunes #4

Hey there lovelies, I hope everyone is off to a great week! Maybe a little Tuesday Tune to start your day? I have a lovely woman (and her band) in mind for today...

I first saw Alison Harris and the Barn Owls in the North Bay, where I lived for several years during/post college. My girlfriend and I went to a cafe that has live musical shows. And I immediately fell in love with her voice and their sound. It´s so true and shows a natural beauty in the music. 

Also, while I was finding this video I found out that she is doing a harmonious collaboration with 3 women. They´re called Bootleg Honeys. Gorgeous. Find them on Facebook. And if you like them, they´re stationed in Northern California.

Hello all! I'm so ready for today because I get to start it with Tuesday Tunes :) Everyone is welcome to join in the link-up, just be sure to a) share a musical discovery b) link back to this page. There's no link-up listing but I'll try to figure that one out in the future. 

This week I chose a band that I just recently stumbled up. Maybe I saw it on the YouTube sidebar of recommendations. They're music leaves a taste of wildness and freedom lingering in your ears. I previewed several of their songs, but this one really stuck out to me for several reasons: 1) deep respect for nature 2) spiritual and mysterious elements 3) an alligator sliding down sand dunes!

Yay my second Tuesday Tunes! This is a weekly post I created to share new musical discoveries and favorite artists...because who doesn't love music?! I definitely do, and all kinds! Feel free to join in the fun yourself.

My pick for this week is a really cool chick who does awesome covers with her ukelele and beautiful voice. Not only that, but she also sings and plays all music herself, which I love. Her name is Rae Sterling. I found her when I was looking for songs to play on my ukelele on YouTube. I keep listening, as she always has new music she's posting. Her style is versatile, but I'd definitely recommend if you wanna hear some amazing covers, get lost in beautiful vocals, or for creative inspiration :)
